What are Stabilized Mud Blocks? Stabilized Mud Blocks (SMBs) are an alternative green Building that can be used as an alternative to Bricks or ACC blocks. Bricks and ACC blocks used more energy to produce than SMBs. SMBs are made from a mixture of locally available soil, water, and stabilizers such as cement, lime, or fly ash. The exact proportions of each material may vary depending on the type of soil and stabilizer used, as well as the desired properties of the SMBs. However, a general guideline for SMB production is: Soil: The soil used in SMB production should be clayey or silty, with low sand content. The ideal soil should have a plasticity index (PI) between 10 and 20, and a pH value between 6 and 7.5. Water: The water used in SMB production should be clean and free from impurities. Stabilizers: The stabilizers used in SMB production include cement, lime, or fly ash. The amount of stabilizer used will depend on the type of stabilizer and the soil characteristics. Typically,...
GREEN WALL / LIVING WALL / VERTICAL
GARDEN
(Trending concept to bring nature
back to concrete jungle)
Green wall or living wall or Vertical Garden all names to represent one design element that is popularly known as green wall. I am going talking about the basic concept of the green wall, pros & cons of it & a little history about green wall.
Let’s start with a little history; it feels like green walls are one of the modern design elements, but green walls actually date way back. The key idea to design a living green wall was first patented by Stanley Hart White in 1938 and was later popularized by French botanist Patrick Blanc. As a result of his work at the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris, People recognize him as “THE GODFATHER OF GREEN WALLS.”
Green walls can be used in outdoor as well as indoor spaces. It is totally depended on the choice of the plants & your aesthetic taste. Some people hesitate to use natural plant in the green wall for those artificial plants remain another option. Artificial plants are easy to maintain, and they remain their size, texture & color same as the first time you install them. But key things are missing in artificial plants is feel, fragrance & touch. You can only get this thing in natural plants, but they are a bit hard to maintain. As they require constant irrigation, trimming, fertilizing, pesticides, etc.
It is totally depended on the person’s choice & requirement. But in both the condition green wall makes the interior space pleasant & energetic and exterior space a cinematic masterpiece in the concrete jungle!!!
I am going to discuss about 2 main types that is Natural Green Wall & Artificial Green Wall. So, Let’s Start with Natural Green Wall.
Natural Green Wall:
As it says natural green wall means real plants that grows!!! Natural green wall needs proper care & maintenance to look beautiful & function good. Because where plants are introduce 3 more things we need to take care of that is 1 Soil & Fertilizer, 2 Irrigation & 3 Sunlight. In indoor green walls we can avoid sunlight by selecting plants that don’t need direct sunlight. But we have to look for the other 2 options.
Other than these things one more thing we need to take care of that is growing medium. 3 main kinds of medium is loose medium, mat medium & structure medium. You can read in on Wikipedia.
In designing & developing green wall there are few things we have to take care of, plants (the green object), soil (growing medium), Structure (support system) & water (irrigation system).
Plants & soil are key parts in green wall or vertical garden; select your plants smartly because the different region has peculiar present species of plants as per their environments & farming culture. If you require some different kind of spices in your wall than you must first gather knowledge of that plant & it’s nurturing culture. For an example, orchid flowers can’t grow in environments like Africa. Identically, lotus can’t grow without mud. This kind of information one should collect before choosing plants. Similarly, you have to be extra careful about choosing soil & fertilizer. Because each unique species has different kind of need from fertilizer.
Water remain the key thing in the green wall. You can design, irrigation systems for your green wall according to available technique & present expert. Some of the widely accepted techniques are drop irrigation, sprinklers & smart irrigation (sensor base automated irrigation)
Structure can represent solid walls, ropes, framing, free standing scaffolding or anything that can bear the load of plants, soil, irrigation system & weather.
There are hundreds of organizations working for green wall system:
One of them is growing green guide. It was a joint initiative of the University of Melbourne and the Inner Melbourne Action Plan (IMAP) with the cities of Melbourne, Yarra, Stonnington and Port Phillip. The project was funded through the Victorian Government’s Victorian Adaptation and Sustainability Partnership, and through the IMAP Councils. The project ran from 2011 to 2014.
