An Architecture marvel has gained its shape in middle of the dessert of Rajasthan, India. Rajkumari Ratnavati Girl's School, Salkha, Rajasthan is trending nowadays for making a change in dessert in term of woman empowerment, construction technology, local art & craft empowerment by an N.G.O. CITTA Foundation.
The Rajkumari
Ratnavati Girls’ School in Rajasthan was conceptualized by CITTA founder
Michael Daube, and designed by US-based architect Diana Kellogg. The concept
of having an center for education as well as women’s center is an unique idea
to design & it is more difficult to design it in the middle of the dessert
where in day time the temperature goes to its peak of 50° Celsius. But it is
true now…
The School is located in Kanoi village. The school is impressive in appearance, with an oval-shaped structure that conforms to the desert plain. The building comes with elements of sustainability. The school component, known as the Gyaan Center, will accommodate 400 girls from kindergarten to Class X. The complex also has a textile museum and a workshop, as well as an art gallery to sell their art. In another building, women will be trained in traditional arts such as weaving and cloth to preserve the dying handicrafts.
This building is
true symbol of women empowerment. The architect has made curvilinear shape of
local forts and also universal symbol of female strength. The building is made
out of local material of sandstone & wood. No air conditioner of cooler is
used for controlling temperature of building. The architect has design the
courtyard in between that used to control climate of the building as well as it
can be used to store water in rainy season. It can harvest & store 3.5 lakh
liters of water in it.
The elliptical shape
of the building will help to keep walls cooler & avoid direct sunlight and jalis
are so helpful to make natural air flow in the building & make the building
help to reduce carbon emission. solar panel on the rooftop will act as a canopy
& also generate energy for the building. This will make building self-sustainable.
